There's a way to make an entrance my destiny it was now a conspiracy of witches downloading today bye let's do the limbo humans aren't the only ones who enjoy.

Slipping and sliding come on let's do another rhyme it's easy to find humor in animal behavior sometimes even our best attempts to interact with wildlife can go haywire so leave your serious side behind bring along your smiles chuckles and laughter.

I'm marty stauper join me and the animals for fantastic follies so so.

I meant to do that i love springtime look at this day what a beautiful day i'm at a favorite camping spot in montana with my brothers mark and marshall and a pet raccoon rocky well you know right down here down at this ravine where that creek comes in we are revisiting an area we know to have.

Bears bears are playful creatures and like this cub they're always looking for something to do a rare meeting between a black bear cub and a grizzly cub is destined for fun a game of tag and a little hide and seek.

You're it hey let's both be it cool made you look wait a second i wasn't ready follow me i don't think so where'd he go.

Darn just when we were having so much fun but the black bear cub is up a tree literally and wondering now that i'm up how the heck do i get down the encounter leaves no doubt that the climber of this wild pair is the black.

Bear meanwhile the tree-bound playmate becomes a little too bold look ma no hands he sure is taking his sweet time coming down yikes this guy is dangerous i'm out of.

Here maybe i'll climb a tree it's not so easy though not a climber the persistent cub will try its hand in the bush leaving marshall and his pet raccoon behind for the moment.

Mark and i quietly approached the cute cub i'm it no you're it no i'm it where's the mother i don't know it's got me worried it's a cute gun though.

We continue to cautiously observe the little fur ball while nearby marshall looks for rocky who's now lost in the underbrush come here rocky where are you rocky rock now you're it marshall.

Marshall get over here i'm looking for rocky get over here give me a second i'm looking for rocky leave rocky come on give me a second get over here oh the follies of we humans when it comes to motherly protection oh.

Whoa mama come on run run hello goodbye.

So i know the grizzly can't climb but that won't help me unless i can all right come on not my hat okay you can have the hat you can have.

The hat that was exciting man excuse me ma'am your cub is right over here get me up here i'm still hanging on fortunately for us a grizzly is better at somersaults than tree climbing.

Grizzly 3 brothers 0. but no scoring is necessary for this coyote playing catch with himself how can he lose he shoots he scores however when a coyote travels to marmot country that's a different ball game.

The ear splitting whistles are a primary defense against intruders but the marmot is not above playing a game of hide and seek to frustrate the gullible coyote the perplexed coyote runs from one borough to another as if to say all right you marmot freeze.

Hey we're over here not now you can't catch me stop that darn slippery rock so long sucker the outwitted coyote even tries hunting.

Voles without success today just is not his day marmot's two coyote zero these belligerent young badgers are also in search of a meal or maybe just a playmate.

An unfortunate box turtle happens by whoa hello the inquisitive badgers can hardly believe their luck in locating this prize but after just one sniff sister decides to find something more fulfilling leaving brother badger to investigate.

He's just got to find out what's moving inside that shell come out come out wherever you are why am i digging oh yeah i'm hungry uh.

ah forget it adios baby box turtle one badger zero without a shell for protection the raccoon is up a tree safe for now from the foraging black bear well sort of.

But this does not fool brer bear his keen sense of smell and constant curiosity lead him right to the balancing bandit whoa now see what you've done yo dude.

Don't even think about it do you mind will you be my friend buzz off bozo although the bear outweighs the raccoon by at least 20 times and could easily have a raccoon nacho brer bear seems.

More interested in playing than snacking raccoons being mainly nocturnal do a lot of foraging at night these three are not at all shy when the window in an inviting cabin is left open their inquisitive nature is about to get.

Them in trouble here fishy fishy sometimes raccoons can be very persistent somebody stop me.

Bacon and eggs anyone not me i'm too hot to eat having created enough destruction bandit 1 exits bandit 2 is still focused on the task at hand so bandit 3 slips out leaving the obstinate angler still trying to bag a limit.

This raccoon is about to get more than he bargained for he just doesn't know it yet canada geese are among our most beautiful waterfowl the raccoon is about to discover that the canada goose is also a most belligerent bird.

Not so fast you pesky raccoon this masked bandit knows what he's after those delicious goose eggs and he's bold enough to risk the consequences don't go there and stay out.

Uh belligerent see one eggnapper well you get the picture it seems that wherever canada geese are they tend to take charge even in irs parking lot stopping traffic is just second nature to them taxes not me i'm a canada goose.

come along children hey wait for me my personal goose tail begins one warm summer afternoon our backyard has become a motel for.

Three rambunctious guests the two river otters enjoy sharing a plastic pool with our son luke and daughter hannah however the pushy goose decides that water should be the exclusive domain of what else waterfowl.

hey goose honk this you talking to me why i oughta you oughta what fuzz ball you want some of this you want some of this.

one otter decides i've had enough it's slip and slide for me while the aggressive honker takes possession of the pool go ahead make my day there's a west coast cousin of the playful river otter that i've watched with fascination for many years.

Its lovable antics are legendary the sea otter can perform amazing feats with its paws and flippers but until its encounter with a patch of kelp i didn't know it could waltz ah you scared me now where was i.

The otter decides that the dance is done now for a seafood lunch this clever aquanaut has learned to pound an abalone with the rock to dislodge this time we hear it knocking but it can't come in.

the seals seem bored by the whole process maybe it's time for a little nail mom i want food mom mom.

The wake-up call for the clark's nutcracker mom is unmistakable no me no me sometimes in a rush to soothe ruffled feathers mother gets a little carried away mistaking the size of the noise.

With the size of the mouth the capable garter snake makes a valiant attempt to consume a large mouthful of banana slug the slug however has other ideas as if its size alone were not enough of a problem for the reptile the slug is excreting large quantities of mucus to thwart its attacker.

And the bigger the slug the more mucus it produces what the snake gets is a very different mouthful than it had in mind i guess we've all had an experience with our eyes being bigger than our stomachs maybe the snake could take a tip from the golden mantled squirrel why don't you just eat with your mouth full.

This gray squirrel would rather eat upside down this arctic squirrel just likes to hang around period he's content to watch the female tend to all the household duties she has other ideas.

Get over here you lazy bomb and help me just uh give me a minute i'm uh exercising and one and two finished some animals like the martin never sit still they jump for the sheer joy of it.

Oh however the martin would rather play cat and mouse or martin and mouse a white-footed mouse is driven out of height but its young predator hasn't yet mastered the technique.

The rodent goes out on a limb to escape this is a favorite mouse trick that seems to frustrate the hungry hunter it's super mouse you rascally rodent you vexing garment.

mouse one martin zero animals have difficult days just like us at times even keeping on their feet is a chore however this black bear is not just.

Having a bad day it's having an awful day when you itch all over well you need some diversion well hello what's this a stick i love this stick look another stick well hello darling.

Shall we dance oh my butt still itches oh no could be cooties ah what a great day for a walk wonder why no one else is out on the ice 911-911.

This is not funny even deadly predators like the harris hawk can have a trying day this one is compliments of several crazy kamikazes seems the hawk is making itself comfortable a little too close to the.

Nest of a pair of shrikes fighter pilots prepare for takeoff chart um zero strikes 21.

Tiny can be mighty take the desert burrowing kangaroo rack it can be a victim of the deadly sidewinder but not always this is no 99 pounds kicked sand in the face of this downsized rattler finally enough is enough rat 10.

Sidewinder zero ounce per ounce this deer mouse can whip its weight in wildcats well at least it thinks it can the much larger grasshopper mouse is in for the rodent version of let's play choo choo the half pint latches onto the.

Grasshopper mouse's tail and becomes an unwelcome caboose ouch ouch ouch coming full circle the deer mouse is given much better than it's gotten.

Maybe the most peckish of all territorial disputes is the mockingbird versus mirror standoff this bird just can't tolerate itself being on its own turf during mating season one last there take that and the bird is.

Off almost mockingbird one mockingbird zero we've always had animals around the house before our son luke was born and daughter hannah was only a toddler diane.

And i raised two orphaned fishers in a silly mood we named them porky and spud who's getting hungry hannah thinks they're perfect playmates sure she does she doesn't have to clean up their mess coming out too guys oh boy stuff to play with come on follow.

Me uh we're gonna have to get these guys downstairs back in their cage that's it oh now they're in the toilet paper and the garbage what else what next that's.

It oh sorry but you guys have to go downstairs in your cage this is it i think we got to get rid of them today because they're just making too much of a mess i can't look to create peace in the home i spend a great deal of time over the next few.

Weeks teaching the youngsters to hunt but they still need more practice you can catch him pretty good you just can't catch him good enough all right where's porky now i keep asking myself are they ready to be on their own more importantly can i keep them from playing long enough to find out.

Okay oh man yeah i am ready for you to come live in the woods too i'm ready too one final lesson with a favorite fisher food porcupine.

okay i admit it i'm a softy when it comes to those fissures so i remove a few thousand quills from the porcupine just to make it easier on them and on me there's no way i want to spend the whole.

Day pulling quills from their noses okay here it is here it is okay this is the last big lesson this thing is dangerous i took some of its quills out you just have to see what you can do the only animal in the world that can.

Eat one of these things the porcupine be careful hey come back here you have to learn it on your own gonna be a lot tougher without me here.

With pliers to pull out the quills i'll tell you that maybe they don't all eat porcupines sometimes my encounters with animals leave me breathless or wishing i were one summer day these baby skunks decide i'm their mama not wanting that responsibility i remove myself as quickly as possible.

To talk about being chased by animals these georgia wild hogs are not at all keen on me wandering in their territory but a mother's protection of her young is even stronger high in the mountains of montana wolverine cubs play near their den in a snow hollow and up a nearby tree.

I'm on a solo excursion from a family campsite when i discover the busy pair having a ball so come on pause do your stuff with one out on a limb the other eagerly joins in.

What you doing hey this is too high i'm going back down i can fly not well that's one way to get down hey look out below.

eager to share my discovery i lead my brothers and our father back to the spot the cubs scamper and hide as we approach it's not long before their curiosity gets the best of them get back in there.

i can't help being playful with the cubs but i control my urge to handle them you gotta better keep that thing away from your faces here comes a mother.

well we asked for that yeah she probably hurt her cubs what about all her stuff leave it come back when she's gone dad is right but in the meantime my poor pack and hat are in for more abuse.

A wild animal's curiosity and human carelessness can lead to some silly encounters a temporarily vacated champagne picnic is a welcome attraction for a pair of chipmunks they enjoy every drop and morsel of this delightful spread.

this certainly is delicious water but even natural processes can offer surprises as they spoil apples can ferment naturally when animals like these deer consume.

Large quantities of the fruit the alcohol affects them like it affects humans i feel so young i'm not feeling so good maybe i'll just sit down just let me get to my feet.

inebriated or not wild animals are curious about human habitats the old homestead is always a treasure trove for elk brave enough or curious enough to risk it barbecue anyone maybe not.

A camper's tent can provide hours of enjoyment well minutes at least what the heck is this it's alive and what's this lunch.

No must be good for something cool an itching thing that's the spot there's nothing quite as cute as fox kids.

Their antics always make me laugh at times their energetic nature can get them into trouble this crawfish is emerged from a nearby pond the kit notices movement and simply must investigate.

The crawfish decides no thanks and clamps on though not serious the pincher is annoying meanwhile a perplexed fledgling great horned owl watches this kit teeth at the base of a tree.

The score for crawfish and fox hmm let's call it a tie my dad brothers and i are camped near a great fishing spot pretty good breakfast mm-hmm we've just finished breakfast when we're going lunch do good.

Always hungry that marshall while we relax at camp marshall casts into the swift waters he's after a meal for us and his pet raccoon rocky come here what's going on what are you doing oh yeah.

Put your sunglasses on cleaning my sunglasses a pair of fox kits have become separated from their mother and are stranded on a gravel bar in the swollen stream well brother this is another fine mess you've gotten us into mom come and get me.

but the current is too swift for the female fox work birdie bring a rope this better be good hurry up we've got two baby box cubs on this island we got the mother over here what here give me the.

Rope i wanna i'm gonna i'm gonna get the rope across there we can pull those cubs over there we'll get the cubs bring them over to you so our plan seems pretty good.

In the beginning at least uh got him rocky hang on.

We hang on for dear life as marshall fights the swift current mission accomplished the score who cares it's irrelevant.

We're all winners when it comes to helping animals and enjoying their antics congratulations yeah we got him over there that's pretty good i'm marty stauffer until next time enjoy our wild america.

Wow even as early as these 1959 home movies i began developing my lifelong passion wildlife having fun with animals especially babies continues to be a pleasure for me my sister mary and my brothers mark and marshall.

Just as it was when we were growing up in arkansas whether we were playing with ponies or helping marshall ride the donkey we learned to love these beautiful creatures we pointed the eight millimeter camera at any and every cute garment even this red fox that ate from our dog.

Dish could not escape the camera's eye ah my very first wildlife film squirrel versus house cat a little shaky but it's a start i'm marty stouffer join me for a goofy funny touching look at some wacky babies.

free uh decades after our pony rides and.

Youthful exuberant play mark marshall and i head out on a beautiful morning in montana to get a first-hand look at this spring's crop of wild babies just as play exploration and adventure occupied our own time growing up it's a big part of every wild.

Youngster's world our first sighting is an infant mountain lion only weeks old hiding beneath the tree likely waiting for mom's return a lone wolf pup wanders nearby these babies are curious about one.

Another they don't yet know they're supposed to be adversaries hey where are your spots i don't have spots my mama told me all mountain lions have spots well there you go i'm not a mountain lion i'm a wolf a wolf watch this let's see i got claws so.

I can dig in and actually what's a wolf you know a wolf will we howl at the moon that's you that scares me so much at night watch what i can do see matt like climb logs yeah i could do that if i wanted to well come on.

I choose not to but besides howling at the moon uh we we we hunt in packs oh like this watch so you can climb on a log this kid doesn't know anything he must have been born in the late.

Spring okay so you don't want to go hunting for logs how about scratching some trees no you just put your claws out come on can't leave me alone okay hey i know why don't we go chase some butterflies butterflies i don't think so kid.

hey you better be careful up there you don't have to worry about me i'm a cougar i'm a puma i'm a lion i got an idea let's play hide and seek i'll go hide you stay here and count okay.

hey i think i'm picking up your scent it's almost as if you're right here that's because i am right here kid okay now i go hide and you count to 300. okay one two three.

Hundred i found you there you are now you see i have to hide before you can see that's how you play hide and seek now stay there and count hey wait a minute one.

I see you hey come back a young red fox is also out exploring it too is looking for adventure but what is unusual about this little guy is he just can't stay out of trouble this odd looking stalk is a mushroom a.

Stinkhorn mushroom it grows in the colorado underbrush alongside more desirable edibles little does the mischievous fox puppy know but the top of these mature stink horns is covered with a foul-smelling slime flies love the spore laden goo animals don't.

Boy am i hungry hi flies what's eating hey that looks just delicious a little bite of this this is like bugs.

Finally stinky has his smeller back but after a rest count on seeing him again still hungry it seems babies are always hungry these downy feather balls think they're starving they're just killing time until they're.

Next feeding mother barn owl arrives with the groceries a big rat now i want you to share with your brothers and sisters.

I told you one mouthful at a time i love it i love it i love it i love it good point about sharon ma i can't watch he has such bad table manners what a geek you're gross even for an owl anybody want a leg.

One down four to go not all mothers are so accommodating to their offspring when it's feeding time come on mom get up this whitetail dough is more than accommodating triplets.

Mmm chocolate oh boy i got strawberry ma why do we always have to eat on the run hey everybody look at me i'm a surfer this is cool i want my mommy i want my possum kits are famous hangers on.

The litter often numbers more than a dozen with each trying its best to hang on hey ma i suck and i suck and i don't get anything that's because you're on my back i got it hey look at me mom ernie get up here it's time to eat not.

Play don't eat it all guys save some for you brother stop fooling around ernie hey ma are you a deliverer.

Very funny marsupial she's got no sense of humor this newborn porcupine is urged on by mom to learn its climbing skills okay it's time for your lesson junior okay mom how am i doing you're doing fine.

Okay i think i got it oh hey dear ma one paw oh i got it don't worry about me mom i'm kind i just i can get my paw.

I'm fine obviously young mr porcupine doesn't know anything about hanging from a tree if you're gonna hang hang loose like this oh no you see it's not about hanging at all it's about climbing now watch a pro clumsy mammals wow.

Coyote cups are among the cutest fallers these little fur balls are waiting for their parents to return they passed the time like lots of siblings fighting a tiny woodchuck baby watches with great curiosity with mother woodchuck nearby the little one takes a few more chances than he.

Should near the steep dirt bank don't wander off and stay away from those bully coyotes okay mommy bully coyotes bully my eye we'll see who bullies who mommy thinks i can't take care of myself.

While one pup is oblivious to the intruder the other thinks this is much more interesting than fighting i've been looking for you you guys have been bothering my family for generations hey it's just part of the circle of life yes you're not so tough you can't even reach me down here just eat them and come on.

Oh two against one i see what it's like i'll take you both on come on i'm a predator your prey okay feel these teeth oh nice oh yes i'm impressed whatever will i you look a couple of years.

And you're gonna be lunch so let's just run along and play don't you talk down to me this stupid canine i'll chew your legs off you understand me i'm just gonna walk away oh sure run away you big scaredy cat all the commotion finally attracts.

Mother woodchuck's attention here comes the cavalry oh mommy oh mommy i'm so worried about you what they tried to eat those coyotes were picking on you uh-huh it was horrible i told you kids to pick on someone your own size mother and baby reunited safe and sound.

Come on chucky i don't like this kind of gentler stuff stop the relief of the pup after his confrontation is cut short by a littermate's awkward malady it seems that after answering nature's call there is a terrible itch in a most difficult place to scratch.

Worms will do that and these poor little guys are likely to have them since they spend so much time near their den oh i hate worms i can't even reach them if only he could scratch a little faster.

this tree is home to a litter of raccoons careful not to venture too far from the safety of the den without the parent these cute little bundles of fur are.

Nonetheless curious i'm not curious i'm starving yeah me too mom should have been back a long time ago yeah come on guys help me go find something to eat while fluff ball number one decides to explore on the ground number two worries at home.

While number three has higher aspirations hey bring back something good yeah there's gonna be plenty of fish down here after a lot of effort cub number three finally reaches his goal an egg-filled.

Hawk nest the easter raccoon is here hey everybody we got eggs eggs i love eggs that's better than anything can't find in here how do you like your eggs how about sunny side up bombs away.

Oh sunny side down nice catch down there little money but i love it do i smell eggs are you guys eating eggs can it be stinky the fox again indeed it is.

What trouble is he getting into this time raccoon number one hasn't yet learned caution hey what you doing you want to play no we're trying to eat some breakfast breakfast when you can play hey you better leave my brother alone our mom will be back soon the pint-sized predator's fun is a.

Little rough for the ringtail hey go on and let us eat our breakfast or you're going to be sorry don't say i didn't warn you whoa well that's the way you feel forget it so maybe you guys want to play after.

Breakfast huh no now you know why i never leave the tree the fox decides to search elsewhere for a playmate or a meal usually baby animals do not have to.

Learn life skills on their own parents teach this mallard hen is trying her best to urge her brood of ducklings into the water for a swimming lesson hey wait for me i've got my baby cap on somebody please give me a leg up.

seems like there's always one straggler home for these little striped skunks is close to mama skunk or when she's out foraging they try to stay close to each other except for that one independent spirit oh no doesn't stinky ever sleep.

here he comes there he goes whoo hey skunk what you doing you want to play uh no come on i've been going all through the forest looking for somebody to play with you wanna like wrestle maybe or or go jump around or something come on listen we gotta talk um some of the other.

Animals they've been coming by and saying that you've been a little pushy you know you need to lay back a little bit what do you mean well um you know like maybe um could you stop wait wait please i would you stop going around in this circle you're making me so dizzy i could sniff.

These are you coming aren't you strong what is all this commotion hi hi wanna play oh what is the fox doing here all is well in skunk land again except big mama is still perturbed about the intrusion i turn my back for five seconds and you children are playing with strange animals all right roll call.

Putrid okay you're here uh aroma here i am mommy stay by your brother oh dear busty where are you get over here i told you to stay over here by the lake come here you're always getting into trouble it's you isn't it you children are just creating havoc calm down.

is that you yes it's you come here you stand over here all right i guess that's all of us oh wait rosemary you come here oh that's not rosemary it's rosemary poor mom what a litter to care for and there is still one left yep there's.

Always one straggler come here dear there are times when mom's not around to help and encourage this great horned owl fledgling is making its first attempt at flight gee i wish mom was here to help and encourage one two.

brother observes from the nest tower owl airliner zero zero niner wins out of south southwest at one niner proceeding taxi to take off on runway three nights this is harder than it looks okay let's try it again there uh clear for takeoff on runway two-niner and uh i'll forget you.

one two eight practice also makes perfect for this group of little lumberjacks to become expert dam builders the young beaver must first learn to cut trees like the adults i don't know why but i have a strange.

Desire to chew on this wood sometimes their practice is much less than perfect that was very close to my head oh so sorry oh a more ambitious little beaver and a bigger tree.

timber oh it feels good enough no i not have a strange desire to build a dam what.

i know it has something to do with water perhaps if i stacked wood on top of each other in that way we could create a pond a pond me let's go down to the water and.

What is the pond soon it's seeing almost straight again what was i thinking i had the rest of my life to be busy as a beaver maybe if we stack the wood in the water could that be it no no it's instinct oh this water is so refreshing.

I just want to lie and relax here in the pond what is a pond until i begin observing animals i did not realize that some youngsters were so good at dancing why a three-year-old grizzly cub can even do the waterlogged ballet.

so however as dancers go none can top a moose calf even though the young moose and its.

Dancing partner and elk calf are north of the border the dance has a definite latin flavor so.

So so so at first glance the jungle south of mexico do not seem like our wild america.

But north america extends all the way down to the tropics of panama home to a myriad of exotic life like the spider monkey and the tiny margay these creatures vocalize a wonderfully rich audible feast scarlet macaw.

Jaguar the tonacious toucan and the deafening howler monkey what i never knew is that three baby parrots and this odd looking taper can do such a fabulous barbershop quartets.

is oh that's so nice to sing you know oh i sing it i'm saying it yes hello.

What's your name your name your great i'm hungry too i know nice little tree we can go get some fruits in the nozzle well they're not oh yes you like frozen us well they're not awesome nice so nice i tell you what what we do is we take hey where are you going.

You don't know where to go just like the playful primate this baby kawati mundi is not a carnivore he is so famished he grubs for anything tasty with a few time outs along the way there are endless treats in the trees if you can just catch them i got it.

I got it hey come here i got you your history pal here you spider you little i got you i got it hungry or not i've rarely seen such humorous tenacity.

A polar bear's determination helps it thrive in the arctic cold baby bears are at home on the icy ledges while mama bear is out hunting i don't care what anyone says i'm freezing yeah me too if your boys get bored you can go out and play in the snow.

oh yeah never would have thought of that ma the cubs soon tire of hanging around and decide to stretch their paws she's a laugh riot out to satisfy their growing hunger they begin the search for a snack.

Even at this young age they know it means they must head to the water oh yeah here i come oh look a loon an unsuspecting loon is about to be surprised.

guess we ought to eat it then eh the successful young hunter is in no mood to share his good fortune just give me a little piece fate has a way of turning the tables you see the loon has a different plan escape.

You want to be ashamed of yourself picking on an unsuspecting move oh sorry about the whole thing it goes to show you size and reputation don't always mean victory you just got beat up by a bird yeah so.

Who you gonna tell eh nobody just gonna play on this iceberg hours and hours of fun ages three and up let's just try and be happy eh this is no fun i think i'll go do something else what are you doing over there i'm gonna do some uh some like snow licking.

You know i think like your attitude's negative oh okay let's find the joy in life hey look what i got here kelp never seen this before hey lucky you.

Hey look i'm making angels in the snow the warm sun makes them forget their rumbling tummies and they settle down for a little nap just like their human counterparts animal babies spend a lot of time teething which is why they'll chew on anything.

And everything ah delicious just moment objective honey maybe grubs don't see honey no grabs.

it is like an itch that only chewing branch can satisfy careful almost slip and fall if i keep this up i could get job in circus maybe instead of circles you should try balance.

Beam be quiet down there i am i'm in delicate precarious position i have to find a way to climb a big tree very carefully now i see you several times sleep i look for grub down here where it's safe yes well it's not safe here perhaps you could.

Assist and bring down please hey you think maybe on the ground you could give me a hand up here get my balls up over here climb to top i think you need more climbing training from state school no.

I hit you so hard i hit you back come back here where are you going i have enough i cannot a playful pair of baby badgers forage nearby let me speak first most politely hello.

Badger chicks cubs pups kids whatever let me for to introduce my furry brown brother and myself say you bears aren't from around here are you oh that tickles you like this that's nice what's going on over here pleased to meet you oh nice to meet you i think i'll go over here now.

The cub is not biting the little badger in fact the furry teething toy seems to rather like the mouth massage on its loose coat that feels nice could you do it on the other side no problem sweet lady you smell sweet like honey oh you don't smell that bad yourself.

We don't like to eat you we like to play yeah don't be alarmed when i bite it's not to make you dinner the other pair seems to have gone beyond stage one they are into full play mode the bashful bear well no chemistry i guess you know as bad we like to eat big you see bugs and roll.

Around on dead things you don't say oh yes you should try some time with me uh-huh bye hello now this is more like it that's there's plenty of bears to go around with no grown-ups around to teach them.

The normal reactions to each other they innocently continue to play even though their parental separation is temporary a permanent lack of parental guidance is a big problem for orphans that is the case with a cub i named grizz i carry the orphan to my mountain cabin when she is just weeks old.

Adopting a precious little grizzly like this takes a lot of time and effort besides feeding her i have to play mother to this lovable little teddy bear but her antics and affection provide me with laughter tears and always a feeling of accomplishment.

Oh boy these humans have got it made i'm gonna uh as a bear gets bigger it grows more and more independent and playful.

Good morning mr sap sucker how are you today i hate being called a sap sucker sap sucker woodpecker whatever bear cubs love to tease and tussle a pair of growing grizzly cubs try to one-up each other in a game of king of the mountain one silly sibling slips over the edge as he tries to claw his way back up.

Sister seizes on the unfortunate incident sometimes one's misfortune is the other's pleasure especially with a couple of nutty bears hey mom sis is playing the ravine again.

On the nearby pribilof islands off the alaskan coast northern fur seals breed and give birth the young although not as agile on land as bears still practice adult duties by playing their version of king of the hill okay somebody want a piece of meat watch out there.

Okay i'm king of the hills that's so tough i'm up here now hey look at me i don't like that very much here i come soon they tire of the game it's time for a little snuggling with mom tell me what happened sweetheart well i was playing this game.

it's hard being king of the hill just as in humans sometimes itching can be contagious so.

as this family of kit foxes begins to scratch mother fox tries to make sense of it all i don't understand i just washed everybody this morning.

Oh golly got me going now okay okay they're not real dogs we're not they're black-tailed prairie dogs i'm afraid i'm praying it seems that one of these prairie pupsters is determined to have an adventure away from home perhaps with this tarantula.

the tarantula is in no mood to be snipped what's the matter this puppy decides that home is much safer what happened i'm getting back in the hole but the rambunctious little pup is not about to stay in the confines of his den like his.

Siblings oh no he's off to see the world well some of it anyway i wasn't scared all right hey what are all these little what what are these you weren't here a little while ago little does he realize that.

These harvester ants are about to change his mind about the wide open spaces what y'all doing but there he is with all those ants now for the consequences of his curiosity.

Scooching on the ground for all he's worth he tries to ditch the stinging monsters what do i do what do i do what do i do get out of the ass good point finally home sweet home i wasn't scared oh no.

Here's our determined friend again stinky the fox he's out to pester another neighbor a goose nest may be just the ticket good afternoon mr and mrs goose but this time it looks like he may be on the receiving end of the fun i don't mean to be rude but as you can see by my feathers i'd prefer you don't touch our.

Eggs is he gone dear not quite here this pair of canada geese are in no mood to have their eggs napped others off stinky on the other hand seems to think it's just a game game i think not now listen here you rocky little mammal that's telling him darling thank you i was just wondering if get out of here.

Really go home i don't want to have to get ugly now but i was just wondering if the goslings could play the little fox and father goose get into a staring match the gander can tolerate no more one thing is certain stinky does not give up easily.

But even this bundle of energetic aggression is bound to meet his match sooner or later a snapping turtle tries to hide in the low grass oh it is so good to be all alone uh oh red fox alert hi mr turtle what you doing i've been.

Having a wonderful afternoon playing with all my friends the raccoons the skunks and the geese hey how about you mr turtle would you like to play huh wouldn't ya fresh from his last encounter you'd think he would be more cautious but this inexperienced little traveler apparently has no fear.

Big mistake think twice before you break my solitude mr fox oh so you want to raffle even though it seems slow the snapping turtle can be surprisingly quick yes come here and let me give you a little kiss okay with me how does that feel huh.

You like that mr you like how that feels run away little fox the turtle alone at last slowly and methodically goes about its business oh boy oh that hurts.

That's the hardest kiss i've ever had he must like me a whole lot this has been the greatest day i don't think i've ever had so much fun i think i'll take a little nap late in the day my brothers and i head for a wolf den i spotted earlier.

right down over there the little wolf cubs are also fuzzy bundles of energy adult members of a wolf pack all help rear the litter a female returns to babysit the brood.

She's prepared to relax and keep an eye on the youngsters until moms return by the time we arrive the babysitter seems bored with it all the cubs on the other hand are anything but restful.

we have fun watching the tireless cubs fed up she calls for a little help finally reinforcements it's time for us to leave these hungry little wacky babies to play out their.

Roles in nature with mom back the puppies settle in for a little motherly comfort as evening nears we head back to camp a perfect ending to a beautiful spring day mothers rejoin their young the little ones eagerly look forward to.

A parent's return babies find security in family reunions it is all as it should be we need to do what we can to keep it that way.

I'm marty staufer until next time enjoy our wild america free so what's now what is this as i drive along a mountain highway an unusual road-killed animal catches my.

Eye if this is what i think it is this is a creature that is rare not only in these northern rockies but throughout the country it's a nursing mother fisher where are the babies maybe the mother's final tracks will lead me back to the den.

hey what are you guys doing in here hey how many of them brother and sister you are cute let's go home.

Oh you're cold let's go there is nothing quite as cute and cuddly as a baby these orphan fishers are no exception but if these babies are to survive it looks like it will be up to me and my family to raise them it's not the ideal way for a wild baby to grow up the real parents are always.

Best wild babies are a joy whether we're raising them or just observing them join me as we enjoy these tender times me hmm.

oh springtime in the rocky mountains the snow melts flowers bloom.

Birds sing and every form of life is renewed when a female bighorn sheep is ready to give birth she leaves the herd and finds a secluded narrow ledge here she brings her baby into the world weak and wobbly at first the lamb will soon grow strong and.

Healthy on its mother's milk when the lamb is about one week old the ewe takes it back to the other sheep the yews and their lambs band together for mutual protection while some sleep or graze others keep watch for predators.

but the lambs are young and know nothing of these dangers and couldn't care less they are perfectly happy to spend these warm early summer days romping and playing this play is for fun but it's also practice for more serious.

Matters one of the most inquisitive and playful of all animals is the grizzly bear these baby bears are closely guarded by their cautious mother she has her paws full keeping track of the playful youngsters.

it used to be widely believed that animal play was just so the babies could learn how to function as adults now we think that bears play for the same reason our own children do because it feels good watching her cubs is not enough.

She must cut play time short to teach them a valuable hunting lesson at the annual salmon run in alaska this mother catches a fish and introduces it to her inexperienced offspring she continues to pull out fish but her.

Cubs want nothing to do with them convincing her cubs that an enormous thrashing salmon can be eaten is quite a job for the mother bear it will take time and patience to teach your cubs that this scary floppy thing is really food.

Time and patience are what most mothers have for their offspring this stream crossing lesson is putting a raccoon's motherly patients to the test she tries to encourage around certain youngsters across but is not having much luck convincing her timid babies.

What starts out as a lesson in getting across the stream quickly becomes a swimming lesson by accident one of the babies falls into the water and finds the stream challenged now if the mother can just get the other to try.

frustrated she checks on her first little swimmer who is now doing fine the reluctant youngster can hold on no more it may not be elegant but the young raccoons now know the water is not so scary.

Our western shores are home to an animal that spends so much of its time in the water you would think it a born swimmer the sea lion but sea lion pups do not take to the water instinctively they must be taught to swim this mother tries to persuade her little one that it would be fun to join the.

Other seals underwater with her coaxing the pup takes the plunge on second thought the unsure youngster is not convinced and scrambles back to the safety of the rocks but given a few more tries the young sea lion will soon be swimming gracefully.

With the others it is not only the wild parents job to teach their offspring to be like their own kind but they must also teach the young to protect themselves from a host of dangers even though this white-tailed doe seems calm she is constantly alert to.

Intruders whether they pose a real threat or not she has already taught her fawns how to react to danger any strange sound can mean predators are approaching yeah what's that looks like something's been rubbing on here she knows by experience humans are.

Predators quietly the doe leads her fawns away as she's taught them each one finds its own hiding place this pile of timber looks pretty dry whitetail mother will sometimes teach her offspring to hide by forcing them down with her nose or forefoot in this case the fawn has already.

Learned its lesson the doe knows that one of her fawns is hiding close by but where's the other one and is it safe as reluctant as she is to leave her fawns her instinct tells her that she must first protect her own life hey what's this over here.

She cannot know that the woodsman mean no harm let's go we don't want to make her nervous the doe is wise in her caution the lesson she learned as a fawn and taught her own offspring is that the individual must survive to carry on the species.

And like all mammals when the crisis has passed the fawns quickly returned to the warmth and comfort of their mother not all wild animals are raised solely by the mother one of the exceptions is a predator of the white tail the timberwolf this wild hunter lives in packs and.

Raises its young as a group throughout spring the life of the pack revolves around raising the newcomers only one litter is born to the pack each spring on that litter is lavished all the affection and attention of the adults.

Even though the litter was born to the male and female leaders of the pack this pack has seven members at the top are the leaders alpha male and alpha female down the social ladder each member has a certain rank which is supported and defined by gestures and postures.

Submissive and dominant what we might call body language by using body language each wolf establishes and defends its position in the pack at an early age play helps to decide their places wolves are not born killers they are.

However born with certain behavior patterns running jumping and stalking that help them learn to survive one day this young deer and young wolf may be prey and predators but for the moment both youngsters are still innocent and curious unschooled in their.

Respective roles because it is a predator the pup is naturally more playful than the fawn wolves must search for their meals so they never stop investigating and exploring the fawn is also inquisitive but in a more contained way it does not know what to make of this.

Furry and energetic creature however the fawn is not afraid its defense reactions are for the most part learned by seeing adult deer run the fawn too will know to run surprise it may the young wolf cannot interest its new acquaintance in a game.

Of hide and seek someday they might meet again but for now no matter how far they roam there is no place like home and mother in the spring polar bears dig out of.

Their dens with their young they have done their job so far they have reproduced and survived this harsh arctic climate but life is not always so serious ah these playful cubs are just getting to.

Know the snowy environment in which they will spend their lives sometimes big brother is not much help yes is.

In our southern forests wild hogs roam free it's spring and there are young piglets everywhere some just born it's not long before i find the newborns nest is a cleverly constructed hiding place for the sows litter because they are born nearly hairless it's also a warm haven for their first.

Week of life look at you little guys you're cute i know the sow must be nearby but they're so cute i hate to go when the sow returns i quickly leave mother hog to her family duties.

As a protective parent she could be dangerous since the 1950s wild hogs have been plentiful in the great smoky mountains these cute little piglets are by far the most prolific large animal in america aliens to the kentucky and carolina forests they are overrunning the age-old.

Home of the black bear there are some records of bears killing hogs and some of boars killing bears but even though the two species do compete for food and living space for the most part they avoid each other however cubs and piglets are not yet aware of these adult facts of life.

Uh babies rejoin mothers who upwind of the pigs is unaware of her cubs playmates for baby animals friends are everywhere this bear cub is about to get into some smelly trouble the youngster still does not know what the business end of a skunk is all about.

No matter where babies romp life continues to be one innocent discovery after another sometimes wild babies learn a lot on their own these red fox kits will learn all they want to know about snakes while their mother hunts.

The kits have disturbed a bull snake sleeping outside their den this relative of the gopher snake is harmless but it puts on a terrific act mimicking a rattlesnake as it kisses and vibrates the tip of its tail it makes believers out of the fox pups scaring one of them back into the den.

Which in turn scares its jumpy brother after a while the immediate fright subsides and fear becomes just another form of fun a game that will make these pups all the more ready for their next encounter with.

The snake after all the next one might have real rattles on its tail on the many high ledges of our western mountains resides the mountain goat this animal lives higher than any other in north america.

In late may the female mountain goat a nanny isolates herself from the group to give birth only minutes old this newborn kid enters a dangerous world the black bear poses little threat to a healthy kid.

But it might catch one that has been injured and these cliffs are just the place from which newborns can fall so close bond between a nanny and her kid is the basis of the young goat's.

Survival in this harsh alpine environment when the kid is old enough to travel they join others initial meetings can be somewhat confusing but soon the young make friends and urged on by their mothers play and learn to be at home on the ledges.

So so so goat country is also eagle country the cliffs create updrafts on which.

Eagles soar and hunt the bird's strategy is to strike an unsuspecting kid and hurl it to the rocks below but the nanny is constantly on guard and usually positions herself between her offspring and the cliff's edge even so golden eagles kill more mountain goats.

Than any other single predator they nest high where few others venture here they care for their young you would not think it to look at this ball of fuzz but this down will soon be replaced by feathers it quickly grows to a fledgling almost as large as its parents ready to try its wings.

soon it's time for the first real flight initially however the problem is not flying but landing with practice though it's soon soaring with ease one of the most elegant birds in the air.

the severity of the weather in the far north keeps caribou on the move even during birthing season like all animals these caribou must learn to adapt to the severe arctic climate at a very early age like this newborn struggling to stand in its icy new world.

the mother seems confused as to why this small wet calf does not follow her only minutes old not yet able to stand the newborn tries in vain uh.

Even though the mother wants to move on she keeps returning and encouraging her infant so finally she seems resigned to waiting for it to gain its balance.

A poignant reminder of the power of motherly instinct not all births perpetuate life this moose calf died it's only a matter of time before its scent reaches the keen nose of a grizzly or a wolf.

But the cow remains faithfully by its side for days she tries in vain to rouse her dead calf the wild mother's instinct to stand by her young is so strong it compels this arctic fox to protect her litter against the slightest hint of danger.

No matter how threatened she may feel mother will not abandon the kids she has sent into hiding huh oh finally the caribou moves on to graze elsewhere and leaves the family in peace.

During the birthing season on our western prairies the animals that raise their young here are accustomed to afternoon thunderstorms prairie storms though blustery are normally brief.

When the storm is over the prairie comes back to life baby cottontails emerge from their protective nests in the first few weeks after leaving the nest the litter mates hang around using the nest site as a base of.

Operations each day they venture farther from home until they are finally independent cottontail babies are not the only youngsters out on this warm spring day my daughter hannah and son luke are also enjoying and outing and are intrigued by anything that moves.

Hey dad look at the baby bunny hannah spies this cute cottontail one of the first newborns of the year incredibly soft there are few animals as delightful for children to touch as a bunny very careful with it let's see short the loop look it's a bunny.

Baby that's just a little baby let me see it oh don't be afraid oh don't be afraid oh and the little feet a little feet are so great a little claws you need to learn how to hide better and nobody gets you good luck.

Time for this wild baby to go home in the tall grass of a country meadow a bob white has constructed a shallow nest and lined it with grass over the course of several weeks the hand has laid a dozen small white eggs the hand gently turns the eggs and is careful to keep them close together.

A few days before hatching an unhatched chick makes a tiny pinhole opening in its egg and begins breathing with its lungs it also starts making an almost inaudible clicking noise 80 to times per minute it's theorized that chicks within eggs.

That are close together can hear each other's clicks and this stimulates them to break into the world at almost the same moment a phenomenon called synchronized hatching unlike most mammals these fresh hatchlings only minutes old are already physically capable.

Even before their down has completely dried the rambunctious bobwhite babies are investigating their world out in the open the chick's movements do not go unnoticed mother quail to the rescue even the kestrel's sharp talons are no.

Match for this hand's determination to safeguard her young for all the energy birds invest in their offspring the parental bond is amazingly short-lived in the avian world youth passes quickly once grown birds have only their instincts to guide.

And protect them it's spring in central florida and a female armadillo is searching for a density although she may have as many as 15 burrows scattered throughout the sandy palmetto forest this one is special for it will house her next litter of yum.

With her long strong claws she begins in earnest before she's done she will excavate a tunnel that may be 20 feet long leading to a multi-chambered den five feet below ground an armadillo is not particularly quick or agile but it is a world-class digger.

A most amazing adaptation of this burrowing creature is that if stressed the female can delay giving birth for over two and a half years even though normal gestation is eight to nine months born fully developed with their eyes open.

The four little carbon copies have pink leathery shells that will harden with age until then these babies nurse contentedly life is good the opossum is a common nocturnal creature in north america with a unique reproductive system.

It is a marsupial for a mother opossum labor is not long or difficult marsupial young are born while still in an embryonic stage of development these tiny babies are smaller than honeybees.

As many as 20 of them may be born in a few minutes they look so helpless how will they ever reach the safe destination of their mother's pouch unlike other mammals which are born attached to an umbilical cord the young.

Possums are floating free inside her uterus at this stage the hind legs are hardly present but the tiny four legs are already well developed complete with claws that aid in reaching the pouch by the end of two months.

The young have opened their eyes grown fur and are about the size of mice though still dependent on their mother they now venture outside the pouch all of them trying to crowd back in at once if frightened as they grow older and braver they begin to ride around on the outside clinging to their mother's fur.

Um giving birth is not nearly as easy for this cougar but a mother knows what to do instinctively and immediately she must free each kitten before it suffocates the birth sack provides protein until she can hunt again.

The stimulation of her tongue cleans the kittens and helps their breathing and circulation in this strange new world instinct tells these blind and helpless balls of fur where to look for their first meal in a week the kitten's eyes are open and they begin to explore.

Meanwhile the mother has grown restless she shares her territory with a bobcat that presents no threat to her but would welcome a meal of cougar kitten while she's off hunting she senses that her babies have grown old enough to attract unwelcome attention there is a more secluded cave not far.

Away one by one the kittens are moved carried gently in her powerful jaws perhaps the cougars bad reputation is based partly on its blood-curdling scream it can't roar but it is able to purr a reflection of.

Maternal contentment already the brains and bodies of the kittens stir with age-old instincts play is very much a part of nature's plan it teaches the baby animals what their teeth and claws their muscles and balance are all about it teaches all baby animals to be a part.

Of a group or loners like these cougars it teaches them to hunt or to escape the hunt it teaches them the rituals they'll need to someday carry on their species and at the heart of all this teaching is the mother the wild mother's patience and bond with.

Her young is like nothing else in nature in some species fathers also teach you see what's under it what is it not tigers cougars cougars look it's a mom and her three.

Babies they're really cute too as the wild babies grow and learn we should remember why we need them on the planet the reason is clear for all species including our own they help make life worthwhile hmm.
