We bought a new velvet couch and our cats had to try it out. Funny stuff !
Our previous couch wasn’t really cat proof. Our cats Mella & Maia loved to play on it and left some scratch marks here and there.
Scratching is an instinctive behavior for cats, so we will never be able to stop our cats from scratching. What we can do, however, is redirect their behavior to something other than our couch.
We provided enough surfaces for them to scratch on. There are cardboard scratchers, cat trees and cat towers with sisal.
Also, we had to make sure the couch wasn’t appealing to them to scratch and velvet is perfect for that. According to feline experts velvet is a proven fabric in the war against pet scratching.
Why do cats scratch ?
– To mark their territory
– To stretch their muscles
– To clean their claws
Back to our funny video. As you can see, they really wanted to try it out. Our cats loved the fabric and started rolling around and playing like there was no tomorrow.
The new velvet couch is a big success !
